The Impro-Companion Project

The Impro-Companion project is a music production which was born in the first half of 2021 as a hybrid form between composition and improvisation with the participation of musicians from all over the world who were unable to play together at the same time and in the same physical space due to the Covid-19 pandemic - but it is constantly evolving and does not want to remain a project linked only to this period.
It should also help to sound out the possibilities that arise beyond the conventional “making music together”: On the basis of music and sound material specially performed and arranged by me together with Katharina Dustmann and Eva-Maria Rusche and produced in Studio Katharco, musicians from different regions and cultural backgrounds will be able to improvise online live with each other using the excellent DAW (digital audio workstation) REAPER and the NINJAM plugin so that the individual contributions arise spontaneously and interactively at the moment and can (optionally) be recorded.

The project files should not represent a finished end product in the conventional sense but rather remain freely available in the cloud and serve as sound material and source of inspiration for the following fields of musical experimentation.

My personal concern is always the educational mediation of music: Talented young musicians should have the opportunity to access the sound productions that have arisen worldwide and to use them as a starting point for their own experiments in protected or public spaces. This digital project offers numerous possibilities for different combinations of building blocks: the sound material created during the project can be further processed and / or selectively recombined and used as a basis for further improvisations.

After a long research and experimentation, I have chosen REAPER as platform for this project, for its reliability and for its compatibility with different operating systems - but also for its reduced price and therefore affordable for students who want to use the files of this project. The DAW is a complete digital audio production application for computers, offering a full multitrack audio and MIDI recording, editing, processing, mixing and mastering toolset. It works well on Linux, MacOs and Windows and, very important issue, the NINJAM-plugin is already build-in. In addition, the users can download and install the DAW for a free, fully functional 60-day evaluation.
